Melbourne Cup 2014

It’s that time of year again. The Melbourne Cup Carnival or the Spring Racing Carnival, whichever you prefer to call it, is just about to begin. This is the time of year where you can dress up to the max in and party in broad daylight. Put on your stilettos and hats and head out to join the masses which will be at Flemington Racecourse. Wear a fabulous hat or fascinator as it’s the only occasion you’ll get to do it without looking ridiculous!

Spring Racing is more than just horses

Ladies and gents are invited to walk the catwalk in their best race wear for the Fashions on the Field competition. The gents competition is held on Derby Day only, while the ladies competition runs each day of this major event. Check out their website for more details. About $400,000 worth of prizes up for grabs!

Even if you’re not a fan of horses or horse racing, there will be other happenings to keep you entertained. People watching will be something that you won’t get bored with. There’s eye candy for both ladies and gents, plenty of it! It’s also a great day to pack a picnic and join your friends on the lawns of the racecourse in the public area. For those who can get an invite, or can pay for one, the marquees in the exclusive Birdcage precinct is the place to be. It’s not cheap but if you can afford it, do it in style. It’s where the rich, the famous and the most fashionable race-goers hang out.

How to start Melbourne Cup Day in style?

For those who want to do it in style without the fancy price tag. Consider starting the day off with a nice champagne breakfast at one of the swish hotels in the Paris end of Melbourne. The Sheraton on Collins street would be a great place to start. They’ve decked out their Little Collins Street Kitchen in spring florals, to keep you in the Spring Racing mood. It’s also a great place to head to after the races to enjoy more champagne, cocktails and tapas on their Terrace Bar.

Spring Racing Carnival dates:

·         AAMI Victoria Derby Day – Saturday 1 November, 2014 – First race is at 11:30am

·         Emirates Melbourne Cup – Tuesday 4 November, 2014 – First race is at 10:30am

Launch of the Melbourne Cup Carnival

A host of celebrities and fashionables gathered at Flemington Racecourse for the launch of the Melbourne Cup Carnival 2014. Some gorgeous models showcased the Myer raceway on a carousel and the x-factor contestant (Jason Heerah) performed for the attendees of the event.

Beautiful Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador, Rebecca Panozza, carried in the Melbourne Cup trophy on horseback. After a quick change, she was looking like a model and posing for photos with the horse, Bauer (2008 Melbourne Cup runner up).

The “fabulous femme” tip for the Melbourne Cup

Our tip for the Melbourne Cup race itself:  Protectionist with trainer Andreas Wohler on board.

Both horse and jockey are Germans and so are half of our family! The Emirates marquee theme this year is also Germany. A German horse has never won the Melbourne Cup … so it’s about time a German horse wins the Melbourne Cup!

We’d love to hear about your tips!

Update: Looks like we were spot on. Protectonist won the Melbourne Cup 2014! Yeah!
