Dirty Dancing – Melbourne Musical

If you’re a fan of the movie, you’ll enjoy the musical. The story sticks closely to the original love story of Baby and Johnny, two headstrong youngsters from different social backgrounds who find love through dance.

With no expectations going in to see the musical, I left not being disappointed. It’s the costumes and the dancing which impresses in the same way as it did in the movie. I’m a huge fan of fashion in the sixties and was mesmerised by the way the skirts spun around with the dancers!

There was clever use of graphics used for the changing locations, the scene where Baby and Johnny were practising the lift in the water extracted  the most laughs from the audience. It was pure cheesiness when the actors surfaced from the water and flicked their perfectly dry hair back, making a splashing sound.

“Nobody puts Baby in the corner”

The Dirty Dancing screen movie was big on music and dance. My favourite scene being the closing one where Johnny finally manages to lift Baby. The song ‘I’ve Had The Time Of My Life’ was such a huge hit which has remained a classic till this day. The line which steals the whole show was from Johnny – “Nobody puts Baby in the corner”.

Dirty Dancing the stage show is a sixties fashion feast and the dancing isn’t too bad either! Both the female and male lead vocalists will blow you away with their rendition of “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life”. It’s a great show and will not disappoint die-hard fans of the original movie.
